HOOLOCK GIBBON ECO-CLUB, CHIZAMI
The Hoolock Gibbon Eco Club in Chizami Village Nagaland is a follow up of “Under the Canopy”, an education program in the Northeast of India, initiated by Dusty Foot Productions.
The Eco Club, a collaboration between NEN (North East Network www.northeastnetwork.org), Dusty Foot and Go Wild Workshops, started in December 2010 with a select group of twenty children between the age of 10 to 14, from Chizami village. It is a three year program where the children are learning about wildlife and environment through interactive classroom activites, photography, writing and field based learnings. Two boys from Chizami Alo and Peter are training as trainers so that they can continue the program over the years. A pool of resource persons specialising in different aspects of conservation and education are guiding the program.
In its first year itself the Eco Club has managed to generate valuable documentation of birds, butterflies and moths from the area. Through the efforts of NEN and the Eco Club children there has been a dialogue on ‘ban on hunting’ amongst the parents, the village council and the forest department.
The hope is that these children will one day be able to influence decisions on conservation in the village and the state of Nagaland.
