Indian Star Tortoise: A race for survival

Wildlife Conservation Society - India, DFP

2023  |  2mins 28secs

The Indian star tortoise is a common victim of illegal wildlife trade, primarily traded to be kept as pets. The star-like patterns on its shell have led to this animal’s desirability and popularity as a pet. Superstitious beliefs surrounding good luck and feng shui further drive this trade.

Owners may be unaware that it is illegal to keep Indian star tortoises as pets. They also may not know about their nutritional, habitat, and care requirements, leaving these animals prone to metabolic and respiratory diseases. In the wild, Indian star tortoises are a valuable part of their ecosystem. Let us take pride in this iconic animal, and let them exist in the wild where they belong.
