DFP designs and implements communication strategies and tools across a diverse range of issues
The communication tools developed align with the communication goals of the SECURE Himalaya project. Some of them were tested on the ground and the results of the same are being used to create a long-term strategy. Each tool was designed keeping in mind the uniqueness of the Uttarakhand landscape, with the primary goal to promote the SECURE Himalaya objectives. The specific tools developed and tested/implemented for the project are as given below:
SECURE Himalaya Mascots
These were designed as a versatile tool to be embedded in each area of communication of the project. The snow leopard mother and cub mascots got their names - Himani and Barfi through an online campaign. The mascots were involved in project activities and print material; life size puppets were used in major events and even became the key characters of the radio drama series “Himalaya ki Kahani, Himani Barfi ki Zubaani”, as part of the SECURE Himalaya Youth Community Radio Fellowship project.
The four month SECURE Himalaya Youth Video Fellowship was piloted in partnership with UNDP and Uttarakhand Forest Department. It involved one month residential training on photo-video documentation and editing followed by a three month internship. A group of six young and enthusiastic fellows were selected from across the three project landscapes. Post training, the video documentation work done by all the fellows was compiled to make eight films which were launched on the occasion of the International Mountain Day, followed by screenings at the SECURE Himalaya Community Festival. The films are expected to be used across mediums to engage stakeholders for initiating dialogue, as well as spreading awareness at the national and/or international stage.
Youth Video Fellowship
The four month SECURE Himalaya Youth Community Radio Fellowship involved one week residential training with Kumaon Vani Community Radio followed by a three-month internship. It was piloted in partnership with UNDP and the Uttarakhand Forest Department. 6 fellows were selected for the program and the interviews conducted by them on field were compiled in the form of a Radio Drama Series- “Himalaya Ki Kahani, Himani Barfi ki Zubaani” which was launched on the Social Media handle of SECURE Himalaya, followed by broadcast in Kumaon Vani Community Radio and narrowcasting by the fellows in their respective landscapes as part of the SECURE Himalaya Community Festival.
