DFP designs and implements communication strategies and tools across a diverse range of issues
Hoolock Gibbon Eco-Club, Nagaland
As a follow up to the “Under the Canopy” education program in the Northeast of India, the Hoolock Gibbon Eco-Club in Chizami Village, Nagaland was initiated by DFP in collaboration with North East Network (NEN) and Go Wild Workshops. It started in 2010 with a group of 20 children from Chizami between the ages of 10 to 14. Through the three year program, the children learnt about wildlife and environment through interactive classroom activities, photography, writing and field based learnings. A pool of resource persons specialising in different aspects of conservation and education guided the program.
In its first year itself the Eco Club managed to generate valuable documentation of birds, butterflies and moths from the area. Through the efforts of NEN and the Eco Club, a dialogue was initiated with the parents, the village council and the forest department on ‘ban on hunting’. The hope is that these children will one day influence decisions on conservation in the village and the state of Nagaland.
